Behaviour
Our Vision
At Hanging Heaton J&I, everything we do is rooted in love: “Let all that you do be done in love.”
This vision guides the way we build relationships, support one another, and create an environment where every child feels valued, respected, and inspired to be the best they can be.
Our Approach to Behaviour
We believe that children flourish in an environment where kindness, empathy, and respect are at the heart of all we do. Our approach to behaviour is not simply about managing actions but about nurturing understanding, emotional growth, and self-regulation.
We focus on:
-
Building strong, positive relationships between staff and pupils.
-
Recognising and rewarding positive behaviour, effort, and achievement.
-
Supporting children to learn from their mistakes through reflection and restorative conversations.
-
Using emotional coaching to help children recognise, name, and manage their feelings.
Rewards
We know that positive reinforcement is a powerful motivator. Our rewards system celebrates effort, perseverance, kindness, and personal growth as well as achievement. By highlighting and rewarding positive behaviour, we encourage all children to aim high and believe in their own potential.
Rewards include:
- Weekly Dojo Champion
- Half Termly Dojo Champion
- Termly Dojo Champion
- Star of the Week
- Headteacher Award
- Deputy Headteacher Award
- Lunchtime Munch Award
- Lunchtime Award
Our focus on rewards is not just about recognition, it is about nurturing intrinsic motivation and helping children understand the joy of doing their best, being kind, and contributing positively to our school community.
Consequences
While our emphasis is on positive reinforcement, we also recognise that clear and consistent consequences help children understand boundaries and accountability.
Consequences are always delivered calmly, fairly, and with compassion; giving children the opportunity to reflect and make amends.
Our school follows four stages of consequences:
Stage 1 – Reminder
Stage 2 – Verbal Warning
Stage 3 – Written Warning
Stage 4 – Ticket
Emotional Coaching and Restorative Practice
When challenges arise, we use emotional coaching and restorative practice to guide children towards understanding and growth rather than punishment.
Through emotional coaching, staff support children to:
-
Identify and understand their feelings.
-
Learn strategies for managing emotions effectively.
-
Reflect on how their emotions influence their actions.
Through restorative practice, we help children:
-
Reflect on the impact of their behaviour on others.
-
Repair relationships through honest, respectful dialogue.
-
Take responsibility and make positive choices moving forward.
This approach helps children develop empathy, resilience, and a strong sense of community responsibility.
