WELCOME TO CLASS 1
Hello and welcome!
Our class is a mixed-age class made up of children from Reception and Year 1. Our class teacher is called Miss Patel and our support assistant is called Mrs Ryder. Mrs Norton will be teaching us on a Thursday morning.
Each morning, our Year 1 children are taught Mathematics, English and Phonics by Mrs Brooke-Mawson. Our Reception children will stay in our classroom with Miss Patel and will be taught Guided Reading, Phonics, Mathematics and Literacy. On an afternoon, our Year 1 and Reception children will join together for the teaching of topic work.
Our Reception children are taught Phonics based on the Letters and Sounds scheme, with an incorporation of Jolly Phonics. Mathematics and Literacy is taught according to the EYFS framework. Foundation subjects are taught through a topic-based approach and ties into both the National Curriculum and the Early Years Framework to cater for our mixed age children.
Children will be given a reading book every day and may swap it for another when finished. We encourage each child to read to an adult at least four times a week and for an adult to record their progress within their Reading Log. We are proud to have a range of lovely books from the Colling Big Cat and Oxford Reading Tree schemes. Year 1 children need to read as much as possible at home and to practise their phonics in preparation for the Phonics Check towards the end of the academic year. The child who has read the most books in our class will get an award in our special assembly on a Friday! ‘Help at Home’ activities will also be set on a weekly basis. These are set to support children with some of the subject areas covered in school that week.
PE will take place on a Monday and Wednesday afternoon and will be delivered by a specialist PE coach. Children must remember to have their PE kits in school for those days.
Do keep an eye out for our class newsletters each half-term. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to have a chat with me. Looking forward to working with class 1 this year!
