Art and Design & Technology Rationale for Hanging Heaton CE (VC) J&I School
At Hanging Heaton CE (VC) J&I School, we use the Kapow Primary Art and Design & Technology schemes to ensure high-quality teaching, clear progression and consistent curriculum coverage across the school.

Supporting Clear Progression and Coverage
Kapow provides a carefully sequenced curriculum that ensures knowledge and skills in Art and Design and Design & Technology build progressively from EYFS through to Key Stage 2. This supports our commitment to ensuring pupils revisit and deepen learning over time, developing confidence, technical skill and creativity as they move through school.
The scheme clearly maps progression in:
- Techniques and skills
- Knowledge of artists, designers and processes
- Evaluation and vocabulary
This ensures that no learning is missed and that all pupils receive a broad and balanced curriculum.
Supporting Mixed-Age Class Planning
As a school with mixed year groups, Kapow is particularly valuable. The scheme is designed to be flexible and adaptable, allowing teachers to plan units that can be taught across mixed-age classes while still meeting year-group expectations. This supports long-term planning and ensures coherence and continuity for all pupils, regardless of class structure.
Supporting Teachers Without Subject Specialists
As a small primary school, we do not have specialist Art or DT teachers. Kapow supports staff by providing:
- Expert subject knowledge
- Clear lesson breakdowns and explanations
- Carefully chosen vocabulary
- Practical guidance for teaching skills and techniques
This ensures that teachers feel confident and well-supported, and that pupils receive high-quality, accurate teaching, regardless of staff background or experience.
High-Quality Lesson Planning and Resources
Kapow offers well-structured lesson plans, resources and assessment opportunities that reduce teacher workload while maintaining high standards. Lessons are engaging, practical and creative, and include opportunities for pupils to explore, experiment, evaluate and reflect on their work.
Supporting Creativity, Independence and Evaluation
The scheme encourages pupils to:
- Develop resilience and independence
- Evaluate their own and others’ work
- Make informed choices about materials and techniques
This aligns with our school values and supports the development of the whole child.
Alignment with our School Vision : Let all that you do be done in Love
Kapow supports our Christian vision by promoting:
- Respect for others’ ideas and creativity
- Perseverance and pride in achievement
- Opportunities for self-expression and reflection
Our Art and DT Leader in School is Mrs Daftar. Please speak to her if you would like any more information.
