PSHE at Our School

At our school, we are committed to helping every child flourish academically, socially, emotionally and spiritually. Through our PSHE (Personal, Social, Health and Economic) curriculum, children develop the knowledge, skills and values they need to lead happy, healthy and responsible lives.

Introducing HeartSmart

From September 2026, we will be delivering our PSHE curriculum through the HeartSmart programme.

HeartSmart is a creative and values-based PSHE scheme that fits perfectly with our vision and ethos as a Church school. It helps children understand that who they are on the inside matters just as much as what they achieve. Through engaging lessons, stories and activities, HeartSmart encourages children to develop positive relationships, resilience, confidence and emotional wellbeing while recognising their own unique value.

The programme complements our Christian vision by promoting kindness, forgiveness, respect, compassion and hope. It encourages children to make wise choices, care for others and understand how they can make a positive difference in their communities.

Why We Have Chosen HeartSmart

We have selected HeartSmart because it:

  • Supports children's mental health and emotional wellbeing.
  • Develops resilience, confidence and self-esteem.
  • Encourages positive relationships and respectful behaviour.
  • Promotes British Values alongside our Christian values.
  • Provides a progressive curriculum from Reception to Year 6.
  • Helps children understand and manage their emotions in healthy ways.
  • Equips children with lifelong skills to thrive both in school and beyond.

The HeartSmart Principles

Throughout the year, children will explore six key principles:

  • Get HeartSmart – Understanding how our thoughts and feelings influence our choices.
  • Don't Forget to Let Love In – Recognising our value and learning to value others.
  • Too Much Selfie Isn't Healthy – Developing humility, gratitude and empathy.
  • Don't Rub It In, Rub It Out – Learning about forgiveness, kindness and repairing relationships.
  • Fake Is a Mistake – Celebrating individuality and being true to ourselves.
  • No Way Through Isn't True – Building resilience, perseverance and hope.

We believe that HeartSmart will support our children in becoming confident, compassionate and resilient individuals who are well prepared for life in modern Britain while living out our Christian values every day.

Supporting Our PSHE Curriculum

Alongside the HeartSmart programme, we also use Pol-Ed resources to enhance and support our PSHE curriculum. Developed by West Yorkshire Police, Pol-Ed provides age-appropriate learning materials that help children understand important topics such as personal safety, healthy relationships, online safety, anti-bullying, citizenship and making positive choices. These resources complement the HeartSmart curriculum and help ensure our pupils receive a broad, relevant and engaging PSHE education that prepares them for life in today's world..
