Maths
At Hanging Heaton Church of England Voluntary Controlled Junior and Infant School, our mathematics curriculum builds secure knowledge, fluency, reasoning and problem-solving from Reception onwards. Rich mathematical experiences and language in the Early Years provide the foundations for future learning.
White Rose Maths Hub is the key driver for our curriculum, providing a clear and progressive sequence of learning. We supplement this with resources from NCETM, Twinkl, Primary Stars and Classroom Secrets to support, consolidate and challenge learning.
We place strong emphasis on revisiting prior learning. Daily arithmetic practice develops fluency and automaticity, while regular retrieval helps pupils make connections and retain key knowledge.
We use the Concrete–Pictorial–Abstract approach to develop conceptual understanding, moving from practical experiences to representations and, when secure, abstract methods.
Problem-solving and reasoning are embedded throughout daily lessons. Pupils apply their knowledge, explain and justify their thinking, make connections and use mathematical vocabulary accurately.
Assessment informs teaching, allowing misconceptions and gaps to be addressed promptly and ensuring pupils build secure mathematical understanding over time.
