Collective Worship

Worship at Hanging Heaton CE (VC) J&I School

Our Vision for Collective Worship

At Hanging Heaton CE (VC) J&I School, Collective Worship is at the heart of our school community. Rooted in our Christian vision of Love for Learning, Love for Ourselves, Love for One Another, and Love for Our World, worship provides a daily opportunity for us to come together in reflection, celebration, prayer and praise.

Our vision underpins everything we do, enabling us to nurture every child academically, socially, emotionally and spiritually. Inspired by Christian belief and practice, we encourage all members of our school family to grow in confidence, character and faith while recognising the unique gifts and talents that God has given each of us.

Worship that Inspires and Involves Everyone

Collective Worship is a special time when the whole school gathers to explore our Christian vision and values in meaningful and engaging ways. Worship is led by members of staff, pupils, clergy from our local church and other visitors, bringing a variety of perspectives and experiences to our worship life.

Pupils are encouraged to play an active role by leading prayers, sharing readings, reflecting on Bible stories and contributing their own ideas. Through these opportunities, children develop confidence, leadership skills and a deeper understanding of how faith can shape everyday life.

An Inclusive and Invitational Community

As a Church of England school, our Collective Worship is distinctly Christian while remaining welcoming, inclusive and invitational. We recognise and celebrate the diversity of our school family and create opportunities for everyone to engage in worship in a way that is meaningful to them.

Children are encouraged to reflect, ask questions, share their own thoughts and consider how Christian teachings relate to the wider world. We respect the beliefs and backgrounds of every member of our community and value the different experiences that enrich our school.

Living Our Christian Vision and Values

Our worship themes are carefully planned around our Christian vision and our core values of Trust, Compassion, Forgiveness, Thankfulness, Creativity and Wisdom. These values are woven throughout school life and help children develop spiritually, morally, socially and culturally.

Each half term, our Collective Worship focuses on one of our Christian values. Throughout the half term, pupils explore a Weekly Big Question linked to that value. These thought-provoking questions encourage children to reflect deeply, discuss different viewpoints and consider how Christian values can influence their own choices, relationships and actions. The Big Question extends learning beyond Collective Worship, promoting meaningful conversations in classrooms and at home while helping pupils make connections between faith, their own experiences and the wider world.

Our worship themes explore Bible stories, world events and contemporary issues that encourage pupils to:

  • develop a love for learning by embracing curiosity and perseverance;
  • value themselves as unique individuals with gifts and talents;
  • show kindness, respect and compassion towards others;
  • care for God’s creation and the world around them.

These themes help children understand how Christian values can guide their decisions and inspire positive actions both within school and beyond.

Strengthening Our Home-School Partnership

We believe that Christian values are most powerful when they are shared between school and home. Families are encouraged to continue conversations about our worship themes, Christian values and Weekly Big Questions through newsletters, home learning opportunities and special celebrations throughout the year.

By working together, we help our children grow into thoughtful, compassionate and responsible members of their communities.

Our Christian Distinctiveness

Collective Worship is one of the many ways our Christian foundation shapes daily life at Hanging Heaton CE (VC) J&I School. Our vision influences our curriculum, relationships, decision-making and the care we show for one another and for the wider world.

Through worship, children are encouraged to flourish spiritually and personally as they grow in Love for Learning, Love for Ourselves, Love for One Another and Love for Our World, living out our Christian values of Trust, Compassion, Forgiveness, Thankfulness, Creativity and Wisdom each day.
