Class 2

This is a mixed-age class made up of children from Year 1 and Year 2. Our class teacher is called Miss Wilson and our support assistant is called Mrs Ryder.

On a morning, year 1 children are taught Maths, English and Phonics by Mrs Brooke-Mawson whilst year 2 stay with Miss Wilson for Guided Reading, Maths and English lessons. On an afternoon all children reunite to cover other subject areas such as Topic and RE.

In English, we study units based on the Primary Frameworks, including fiction, non-fiction and poetry. We work closely on reading and writing skills such as comprehension, spellings and sentence structure.

In Maths, we follow the Primary Framework for Maths, visiting a variety of units to study each term. We cover a range of topics including counting and understanding number, using and applying maths, shape, measure and data handling. A daily phonics session is taught based on the 'Letters and Sounds' framework which is adapted to meet the needs of the individual child. Additional work is taken from 'Jolly Phonics’.

We follow the Oxford Reading Tree scheme up to NC level 3, when novels by popular children's authors and information texts are introduced.

Foundation subjects are taught in the afternoon in classes, using a topic based approach and covering all areas of the National Curriculum and the Early Years Framework.

Class 2 have PE on a Wednesday and a Thursday. Please can you ensure that they have an appropriate PE kit on these days.

At the end of the year, year 2 children will take SATs and year 1 a phonics check. Therefore, it is important that children read often at home, practice their phonic skills and complete their homework.

We are going to have a fun filled year and work hard to achieve our best!
